Writer's Block - The Linguist - Teaser

TEASER

INT. MUSEUM OFFICE - NIGHT

A man works tirelessly at his desk. KYLE SOLOMON (22) A neurotic perfectionist with brown hair. He is dressed in a tattered suit with no tie and his top button undone.

He adjusts his glasses as he reads through manuscripts of old texts and hieroglyphics.

THUD. A man drops an old tablet on his desk. His boss. A surly man in his 50’s.

KYLE

Whoa! Careful with that!

He holds back any more comments to not upset his boss anymore than he already looks.

BOSS

I need this translated by morning.

KYLE

What’s the rush?

BOSS

Just get it done. It’s the main attraction to our new exhibit.

Kyle reluctantly nods. His boss leaves.

Once gone, he lets out a sigh, checks his phone for the time (11:17PM), then looks at the tablet, and then sighs once more.

After a moment, he moves the tablet in front of himself.

He looks at the writing, like nothing he’s ever seen before. His brow furrows.

Kyle thinks for a moment and then rummages around his desk looking for something. He finds it. A decryption page on an old piece of paper.

He follows along the tablet and decryption page as he goes.

LATER

Kyle continues deciphering the tablet, checking different texts looking all the more confused with each word.

His head starts to ache. It gets worse and worse until he can’t bear it and holds up his head with his hand.

He notices the writing on the tablet shift between the original hieroglyphics and English during this migraine.

It starts to pass.

KYLE

(in pain)

What the hell was that?

He looks back at the tablet to see nothing out of the ordinary. He shakes his head and blinks a few times.

Kyle continues his work.

INT. MUSEUM OFFICE - MORNING

We see Kyle asleep on his desk. He jolts up from his sleep and looks around confused.

KYLE

Shit!

He rummages around his desk looking for his phone, moving papers and books around, finally revealing it. He checks the time. (6:15)

KYLE (CONT’D)

Shit, I’m late!

Kyle quickly packs up the tablet and his notes and runs out the door.

INT. MUSEUM FLOOR - EXHIBIT B

We see his boss observing movers inside the storage unit unloading ancient relics and structures, piece by piece. Kyle runs up behind him.

BOSS

You’re late.

KYLE

I know, I know. I’m sorry. I was working on the tablet all night.

BOSS

(annoyed)

And?

KYLE

I was only able to translate the first sentence. It talks about the “power of the word”. I don’t really understand what it means yet but the fascinating part is that it isn’t any language I’ve ever seen before. At first glance it seems to look Sumerian but--

BOSS

Then how did you translate it?

KYLE

You see it derives it’s written style from ancient Sumerian hieroglyphics as well as ancient Egypt. There’s also influence from Greece, Rome and even Chinese writings. Whatever this society was, it spanned all over the globe and lasted much longer than most civilizations ever have. It could even still be alive today.

BOSS

And you got all of that from one sentence?

KYLE

There’s more. If I could just have some more ti--

His boss stops him.

BOSS

That’s enough. Put your findings on my desk and I’ll take a look at it later. We have more pressing matters to deal with.

KYLE

What could be more pressing than possibly discovering an ancient civilization that no ones ever heard of?

BOSS

My job. Now stop with your fairy tail mumbo jumbo and get back to work.

KYLE

... Yes, sir.

LATER

INT. MUSEUM FLOOR - EXHIBIT B - STORAGE AREA

Kyle assists the other men moving the cargo from the storage area to the floor, setting it up.

As he continues moving boxes and ancient relics, he discovers an unusual marking on a stone pillar. He dusts it off with his hand revealing a hieroglyphic. Similar to the tablet markings.

Kyle’s head starts to ache and when he opens his eyes he sees the symbol has changed. It’s in English now. It says “Light”

In his confusion he calls over his boss.

KYLE

Sir, Sir!

BOSS

What is it now?

KYLE

The marking, it, it changed.

As he turns around, the symbol is back to normal.

KYLE (CONT’D)

I could have sworn--

BOSS

I don’t have time for this. Interrupt my work again and you’re fired.

His boss walks away.

KYLE

What is wrong with me...?

After a moment of confusion, Kyle looks up and notices another symbol on a different pillar. He questionably moves over.

The image shifts and changes to English once again. It says “Awaken”

He moves to another pillar, and another. Each one spelling out a different word.

KYLE (CONT’D)

Few... Chosen... Within...

He takes a step back and looks at the pillars.

KYLE (CONT’D)

The light within... awakens the chosen few... What does that even mean?

INT. MUSEUM FLOOR - EXHIBIT B - NIGHT

Kyle stares at the finished exhibit. An ancient structure recreated and staged. The symbols on the pillars face inwards and the tablet sits on a podium in the center of the room.

Kyle walks up to it. His head aches for a moment and then passes. The writing shifts to English once again. He begins to read.

KYLE

The “Power Of The Word” is to be passed down through the generations. This power although seemingly mundane, has great potential to change the world and bring peace between nations. You, the person reading this now have access to this power.

Kyle stops.

KYLE (CONT’D)

What?

Suddenly another migraine hits him. This one the worst he’s ever felt. He passes out and hits the floor.

INT. MUSEUM FLOOR - EXHIBIT B - MORNING

Kyle wakes up. He leaves the shrine and walks out into the crowd of people.

Kyle walks around the room, staring at all of the written words on the walls and banners. They shift and change after moments of reading them.

KYLE

Whoa!

He smiles in amazement.

People talk in other languages around him. As they speak, we hear their words shift to English.

Kyle begins greeting people in their own language. First a word or two, then whole sentences, surprised by every word he speaks.

He laughs in excitement.

KYLE (CONT’D)

This is amazing!
